After we left the Alamo we made a beeline for Carlsbad Caverns just outside of Carlsbad, New Mexico. What an incredible place. We, including Christopher, hiked for over an hour 750 feet deep into the ground on a steep and winding asphalt trail. Thank God they have an elevator for the trip back up and out. We were hoping to get to see the nightly bat departure out of the cave but apparently they are still wintering in Mexico and won't be back for a few more weeks. It is suppose to be incredible seeing thousands of bats leaving the cave entrance at sundown. Check out the website for all of the details on the caverns http://www.nps.gov/cave/index.htm. The rooms inside the cave, the rock formations and the history of the discovery, the exploration and ongoing research are amazing.

The pictures don't do it justice. These glimpses you can see in the photos with the limited field of the camera flash and the low lighting they had must be similar to the first people to visit the caves. I cant imagine only being able to see 10 or 20 feet at a time with a candle or torch and not knowing how long or tall or wide the cave is.
