Valley of Fires State Park

We stumbled on this state park in New Mexico after we left Roswell. It was getting late and it was a cheap overnight spot with RV hookups and a nice clean bathhouse with showers. When we got their it was dark so we really didn't know what to expect in the morning. We woke up to a really cool lava field. This is the youngest lava flow in the US. Check out the website at http://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/recreation/roswell/valley_of_fires.html. The lava flow is 5,000 years old and flowed 44 miles. Its 4 to 6 miles wide and 160' thick in some places. It covers 125 square miles. It has lots of plants and stuff growing on it so it you didnt know what it was you would zip right past it on the highway.

We walked the nature trail and the girls even climbed some lava rocks. It was a neat place to spend the morning. Christopher is loving all the hiking and outdoor stuff we have been doing. He hates to come in at night for bedtime.
